The more I look at this, the more I'm confused about how it's not returning an error. The code looks identical to the Python bindings (though I dont understand how Python+C work together), and this seems to imply it would return the error on a non-zero exit code.

Ok I take it back, the change would be as simple as changing the return value to return (returnCode, error) I imagine.
Any objections to this incompatible API change?
