A simple Ping/Pong program hangs about lanes HOT 4 CLOSED

Hangs for me too. Are you on 64bit Linux? If so, this is probably a duplicate of issue #16.

I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 with stock Lua 5.1.4. I feel this is different from #16. In pingpong function, Linda doesn't work at all. When we send a message to Linda, the other part can't receive it. Anyway, I'm not sure if this shares the same cause as #16.

Yep that's strange, I'll look into it, I reproduce it on Win32 as well.

What happens is that your linda keys '0' and '1' are strings that can be auto-coerced to numbers. Because of this, linda:send() interpret them as timeouts and decide there is no data to send, thus raising an error and aborting the lane. Changing your code as follows fixes your script.
