If you open a cmd prompt and type git --version what do you see?
I just installed this package and had the same error on my Windows machine. I was able to correct it by re-installing git for windows and when it asks if you about your path, answer "Use Git from the Windows Command Prompt":
After installation, I had to close and re-open Atom and it works quite well now.

And what of if I was to use the github client rather than the git client to push my gits?

Sorry, until we get nodegit working in atom, shelling and screen scraping is the best we've got and these errors are going to persist. Whatever version of git cli you are using is probably not parameter compatible with standard git cli client.
