FWIW, I personally dislike this approach as it forces you to keep up with Rust nightly. I prefer Servo’s way of targeting a given Rust commit and upgrading as needed/desired.
(But then I’m not maintaining rust-encoding.)

I think this is currently our best approach to motivate the original authors and external contributors to keep the projects from bitrotting. How could we improve on this?

@kud1ing I had a difficulty with keeping up with nightly, and personally prefered to stick to one commit (especially a point release one since it makes the life in Windows easier). Regarding bitrotting: sorry for a hiatus :S

Well, I have realized Rust nightly is quite easy to install in Linux, so I'm going to maintain a separate branch for occasional snapshot for nightly which is registered to Travis CI. The branch is updated "occasionally" as I still mainly work with 0.8, but at least it would be better than nothing.
