about the icon colors: they look good, but there are already 2 colors: grey for offline and green for online. See http://en.lichess.org/people
about gravatar: it requires the user email address. I don't ask for it, intentionally. But I admit it would give the site a nice touch to see player images

Ok. But I'm suggested that not because 'colors look ugly', it's just easier to visually determine what color you're playing and more intuitive. А green dot can show opponent online or not.

there also is a green dot indeed but it has a different meaning.
Across the site, a green user icon means the user has at least one page of the site open. The green dot means he is currently playing this game. I believe both are useful.
I agree your proposal makes it easier to determine who plays what color, tho. As a workaround I indicate it on the left side of the board using two small colored kings.
