I think the text is fine as is, and these concerns not justified.

If anyone is totally unsure what is meant here, think of it like this: if all you can send are a set of characters or words, and your goal is to harass someone, the ways to do so are many.

I get what you're saying, but this is an unjustified concern. Sure, "those users will not be able to send them anything beyond chess moves" should be changed to make it more clear. However, no user, especially beginners, is going to use chess notation to harass opponents because players will be paying attention to the game, not what message the moves make.
You also need to consider how

  1. the messages will need to be made with unintentional cooperation of the opponent
  2. the opponents don't know the person they're playing against is using kid mode

Let's say an opponent decides to do everything they can and harasses the user in chat and notation. What happens? The user doesn't even notice, and the opponent quickly realizes that they have wasted so much time and played inferior moves just to have a tiny chance of getting the user to realize what the opponent are doing. In the end, the user likely wins or has an easy game because of these two advantages, and the opponent will probably never try harassing with notation again.

Or will they be able to write moves in chat?

The next sentence on the Kid Mode page says "Chat functions are turned off."

What do you propose "When in Kid Mode, your child will be able to play games against other users, but those users will not be able to send them anything beyond chess moves" should be changed to?

@randompearl-stack thank you for asking, let me clarify:
my concern isn't that somehow the moves played will spell something out
My only concern is that the current text can be misinterpreted to mean that I cannot chat "sup buddy" to Kid Mode user, but I can chat moves, in which case, who knows what one could come up with.
I simply suggest that the text be changed to make it clear that no messages can be sent at all.

Something like changing

"When in Kid Mode, your child will be able to play games against other users, but those users will not be able to send them anything beyond chess moves"

To

"When in Kid Mode, your child will be able to play games against other users, but in-game chat will be disabled, and no user will be able to send them any messages"

Implying that even users other than current opponent cannot send in-game chat messages either (which I believe is the case even without kid mode... but I'm just trying to help potential users' parents be calm)

Just don't say "users will be able to send X" or "users won't be able to send anything other than Y". It's confusing.

Thanks

Oh.. Yeah I misunderstood what you were saying, but now I get it.
I asked where the source code was, and ornicar responded

It's in our internal content management system, only available to the lichess content team.

so I can't create a PR but perhaps a team member could make these changes?

Someone with access should also add the nontechnical label as its a documentation issue.

@niklasf Could you consider @danispringer's change?

I respectfully disagree. It's confusing for no good reason.
This has been a great conversation...
