Resolved the issue. Problem was the order of the flags.

@oliversheridanmethven this is late, but for future reference (seeing as it is one of the top results on google):

gcc requires linked libraries to be specified after files that need them. So a proper command would look like this:

$(CC) $(CFLAGS) main.o $(CLIBS) -o main

using Makefile notation. This can be expanded to, for example:

gcc -std=c99 -O1 -pedantic -Werror -Wextra -Wall   main.o -lcheck -lsubunit -pthread \
 -pthread -lrt -lm -lsubunit -o main
