@asim thanks

@preillyme the ui interacts weirdly when receiving traffic through service.Type=LoadBalancer. I can curl and things work just fine, but something like:

apiVersion: v1
kind: Service
metadata:
  labels:
    k8s-app: kube-ui
    kubernetes.io/cluster-service: "true"
    kubernetes.io/name: KubeUI
  name: kube-ui2
  namespace: kube-system
spec:
  ports:
  - port: 80
    protocol: TCP
    targetPort: 8080
  selector:
    k8s-app: kube-ui
  sessionAffinity: None
  type: LoadBalancer

Which should just forward packets via gce's L4 cloud loadbalancer, only gives me the blue header. What am I missing? does the master proxy add some headers? maybe destination ip is the problem?

Do you see anything in the Chrome developer console (Wrench > More Tools > Developer Console) I bet it might be a CORS/XSS issue?

Yeah periodically GET http://loadbalancer-ip/api/v1/nodes 404 (Not Found), confused if it's actually asking my loadbalancer for nodes or something else is going on here
