would also work, though i think it might be useful to have the derived Debug
implementation available since it gives a few more details.
Regarding the direction of showing the trie: Not sure if I get you correctly but I think the danger is more having long columns instead of many columns. With the outlined solution long columns grow top down, precisely to avoid the issue.
Implementation-wise, I have a prototype where it should be easy to switch between both representations.

This is still for debugging, so why not make this a custom Debug
implementation? I would also suggest not to turn the Trie on its side (which might be easier to implement, but will become hard to read once it grows too big to fit on a line).
