Hmm. Apparently the answer is no: byte-compilation is not only not always faster, it can in some cases be slower. I’m still working out when exactly that’s the case but it seems to be related to the use of many closures (local/anonymous functions). Since those are presumably generated when running the compile functions, they may have to break out of compiled mode, and incur an overhead.
So at least as a default option this is certainly out.
