You’re right, you cannot get the instance from the DOM object itself. As mentioned in the documentation, if you want to manipulate the dialog instance, you need to instantiate yourself instead of relying on the auto-instantiation.
It seems like a pretty minor case, so I’m not sure I’m keen on adding it to the core library. :)
