The build script runs fine without npm, i.e. if I only run "./gradlew --no-daemon artifactoryPublish" it works. I guess, I'll try to dig in some more.

Failed to publish: Gradle failed with status code 1.
This means that the Gradle command failed so problem should exist in your build script.
I suggest you to run the release operation without gradle-semantic-release-plugin, then you can find out where the problem exists.
