Proposal to keep track of population: when a message is displayed, write a firestore document to a 'most_recently_read' collection, with the UID as the ID, and the timestamp as a value. (similar to how callbacks work.) Then query the number of documents with the timestamp === the most recent message timestamp (or the second most recent or something) and that's the current active user count.

Might be able to use https://firebase.google.com/products/extensions/firestore-detect-presence to keep track of population?
According to Analytics, attendance at Oh The Horror was roughly 50, and I needed to lower the threshold to 3.
