I think we have some benchmarks, but nothing designed to give comparisons with NLOpt. I think someone in optimization (hint, hint) should probably be in charge of that, since I don't have the relevant expertise to make the right decisions on topics like comparing implementations that don't always follow the same trajectory. Because we may not use the same line search algorithm as NLOpt, comparisons of L-BFGS are hard to make correctly.

Yeah I really don't know the "right" way to do this, but thought it was a fair question. Maybe we can just show its not worse than a factor of X from an "excellent" code - that personally be enough for me.

Coming back to this, I'm not very interested in benchmarks against other systems for now and mostly interested in benchmarks that let us assess for ourselves whether the changes we make are useful. Will elaborate more in another issue.
