@yuyichao Why do you think it's that?

My guess is that at some point you updated Distributions, which changed the definition of Normal from a leaf type to a parametrized type (in JuliaStats/Distributions.jl#475). Since the type stored in the file is different from the type in the workspace, JLD can't read it. (In principle, it could reconstruct the type, but that's not really likely to be useful to you since the methods that operate on Normal distributions would not work.) If you downgrade Distributions or re-create the file with the newer version it should work.

That is just one of the reason a non-leaf type could appear in the place it is not supposed to be.

@simonster The breaking change was in the distributions package. I went back to the version that created the jld file as suggested and that fixed it. Thanks.
