Works for me with pathogen. Can you give more information on your system and/or check that the ftdetect file is actually run? (e.g. add an echo "running julia ftdetect" to the file and see if it's printed when you open a julia file).

@carlobaldassi - thanks a lot! your suggestion helped me fix it. after echoing it, i realised the plugin wasn't being loaded. This was because I am using janus as my vim distribution and it changes the default pathogen folder "bundle". thanks.
