Good question.
I never tried, but I've seen, that the latest version of gunicorn supports coroutines.
The next problem however is, if gunicorn supports to overload WSGI against HTTP.
That said, I strongly suggest to switch over to uWSGI. Its faster and more feature-rich. Therefore personally I don't see any reason to support gunicorn.

If you are able to get up a running prototype with gunicorn, please go ahead, but for me it just doesn't make any sense. I'am not even sure, if gunicorn supports websockets.

The answer is true.
I run gunicorn as primary wsgi server and ws4redis.uwsgi_runserver.uWSGIWebsocketServer as websocket server separately.
