One possible explanation could be the transition to doubles instead of floats. Since computing large numerical sums in 32bit floating point precision can be very sensitive to ordering we switched to double precision pagerank values. However this change was made later in the 2.1 release so its unclear if the v2.2 vs v2.1 comparison is observing this change. However, since pagerank is communication bound this could account for the 2x discrepancy.
