No, this one was related to the security groups. In the meantime I found out that you have to mccloud destroy the instance. On the next mccloud up the updated security groups in the Mccloudfile become effective.

I have worked with instance-store type ec2 instances, with ebs-backed instances a mccloud halt + mccloud up should be enough I guess.

I guess the crux was that you can not change the security group for EC2 instances while they are running, as the security groups are assigned at launch time.
