This is actually the intended behavior. It's meant to be used on a block element containing lots of text. Generally a block like this would contain multiple <p> elements, which have display: block by default. Overriding display: block on the containing element and the text elements inside results in some very odd behavior.
That said, I'm prepping an update that exposes the block styling as an option that can be customized at runtime.
