Coming back to this after my hiatus, I think I'm just going to get rid of the destroying messages. They are a remnant of when I was still figuring things out, and they're really only useful for me when tracking down very weird bugs. I don't think anyone will miss them.

From a design standpoint, I agree. But... I've caught 2 or 3 killer bugs (in my code) with it that I wouldn't have noticed without some serious profiling.

Hmm. That makes it tricky. They're kind of a weird thing to have in there so I didn't think anyone used them besides me.

Would it be a design smell to throw them under a Version?

If they're going to stay, I think it makes the most sense to leave them under debug like they are. Honestly, I don't see much of a problem leaving them in there. I was just going to get started on doing some deep cleaning, and the thought of getting rid of them crossed my mind.
