Seems to be a bit tricky.
- Borrowing a method from a jqueryUI plugin seems to be a great idea
- I could try to initialize the function on the element in the sidebar and that activate the actual editing function when adding the dragged clone to the canvas.

I add a maybelater lable and close it for now. All solutions which came to my mind would make the code harder to maintain.
