Honestly, I think what you're trying to do here is going to be really tricky with just the treeview. As you've seen the filtering capability is meant for client side filtering, if you wanted to find a deeply nested item on the server side it looks like you would need to return the entire expansion for all parent nodes for things to display correctly. I'd make a couple suggestions, hopefully one works for you:
- Have a search that's independent of the tree.
- Built the tree in it's entirety before hand.
If building out the entire tree ahead of time is possible that might greatly simplify things for you. Depending on how often your data changes you could rebuild it weekly/night/hourly/whatever.
