That sounds like a good workflow. This depends on whether you are creating a test for BeforeMiddleware, AroundMiddleware, Handlers, or AfterMiddleware.

In lieu of better docs (I'm working on it, promise :)) the general strategy I would take for each is:

For all: use https://github.com/reem/iron-test to mock Request and Response.

Before: Create a Request, pass in an &mut reference to it, check if it has the state you want afterwards.

Handlers: Create a Request, pass in an &mut reference to it, check if the Response looks the way you want.

After: Create a Request and Response, pass in &mut references to both of them, check if they have the state you want afterwards.

Around: Create a mock Handler, create a Request, initialize the AroundMiddleware, then do the same thing as for testing handlers.

I'll keep this issue open as there should really be better docs/examples surrounding this. (middleware in the iron org should also be tested much more than they are now).
