A differences/compare section would also be good.

Count me in there.. http://bugs.unrealircd.org/view.php?id=4320
As you can see without any proper reasoning you get an instant initial negative response.
Especially, as you can read, if you find devs of other IRC software asking the same question and then nenolod joining in, making threats that WATCH is going byebye but no reasoning provided at all.

Don't get me wrong, we of UnrealIRCd have always been in favor of standardization.. even going back to the codemastr days with various contributions to (as usual..) failed RFC attempts.
But there has to be a clear benefit here... watch has worked for so many years and this command looks so similar; that brings up questions... :)

No need to respond here (of course.. you may). I just suggest to add a section or FAQ item about it telling clearly (technically) why this was needed.. why the current watch implementation could no longer be used and could not be extended. After all I and others added WATCH away notification years ago so at that time it felt flexible enough.. etc..

And yeah, a comparison section would be good as well, but mostly for implementation reasons.

If you guys have good technical reasons then I don't mind implementing this, just.. convince me (& others)! :)

@syzop the main difference between MONITOR and WATCH is that it uses ISON-style notifications instead of a separate numeric per client. this is intended to be more bandwidth efficient than WATCH's behaviour.

WATCH being deprecated by IRCv3 does not mean that it is 'going bye-bye', just that we would not advise it be implemented in new codebases.

@syzop FYI ircd-ratbox has removed MONITOR support recently, does/will unreal 3.4 implement it? If not, then as far as I know only charybdis will support it in the short term.

remove monitor, nobody really uses it, rebuild automake to reflect its removal as well

@attilamolnar Thanks for letting me know. In UnrealIRCd (also in the upcoming 3.4 version) we have no support for MONITOR. We also have no plans to add it as we already have WATCH and see very little benefit in MONITOR.

for what it's worth, ratbox has put MONITOR back.
