You could leverage the ion-invalid class that is placed on ion-select to apply the styling you want. Alternatively, you could conditionally render some text below the select if you wanted to give a more descriptive error.

Thanks for the issue! This issue has been labeled as needs reproduction. This label is added to issues that need a code reproduction.

Please reproduce this issue in an Ionic starter application and provide a way for us to access it (GitHub repo, StackBlitz, etc). Without a reliable code reproduction, it is unlikely we will be able to resolve the issue, leading to it being closed.

If you have already provided a code snippet and are seeing this message, it is likely that the code snippet was not enough for our team to reproduce the issue.

For a guide on how to create a good reproduction, see our Contributing Guide.

Hey @liamdebeasi!

Sorry for the late reply, I'll be honest, I fixed this on my own, and was too lazy to create a project to re-produce this small issue when it could be re-producible anywhere, but eventually I thought I'd better help.

I've attached a SB link.

Thanks for the reproduction! This is helpful. I can reproduce the reported behavior, but Ionic is working as intended here. The difference in validation highlighting is due to differences between the design systems themselves. In this case Material Design (typically used on Android) will highlight the arrow red whereas iOS does not. ion-select follows both design patterns depending on the design system used. I am going to close this since Ionic is working as intended and it sounds like you have a workaround, but let me know if you have any questions.

Oh, very well then, how do I best achieve displaying an error state on ion-select (when at least an option is required to be selected), as it doesn't have any attributes/bindings on it's own regarding errors (unlike ion-input/ion-textarea)? Or, any UI/UX ideas about other components?

Thanks in the meantime!
