I get the same issues on the hosted environment, I am adding the $payment_qrcode immediately after a $payment_button, which seems to trigger the bug.

The payment button seems to have a dangling close paragraph html tag </p> that ends up printed, which might be a related issue.

I tested in a fresh docker container with the same result.

In public notes field it does work as you suggested but all others it displays a long string rather then a QR. Clearly not functioning properly.

In the next release, if you wish to use the payment qr code in a custom design, you'll want to use the variable

$payment_qrcode_raw

This variable will not have the html entities encoded so will display as expected.
