They each pull certain information, so it would depend on what your needs are. The 3 different files seem to be general structures, as in they will just be the ouline of the structured data on the openlib server..
Edition is showing all information.
Author and work is showing a select amount of information with small variations.
Even if the JSON structures has been edited the edit you see on this page are about that site, and wheter edits have occured there.
The commits I see on Github would be about requesting data, which can change more frequent, how ever the outline of the data will remain..
