First of all, thanks for asking!

There is no "hard" reason to use 1000 instead of 5 but yes for -1, in our case at least, running the scheduler indefinitely faced us to problems (time ago) with a slow or stuck scheduler, for that reason we set it. (And if I'm not wrong Airflow (maybe in the old airflow's doc) indicated to restart from time to time the scheduler, with a value of 5 this occurs often of course). Personally in this case I was who set up this value and It might be wrong but for us is OK 😆

So... feel free to set up the value you want and try it!, there more we'll very happy to read back your conclusions and if you has faced problems or not with that.

Thank you for your reply.
3 weeks later our scheduler works well with no sign of slowness or stuckiness (is that a word ^^). It's an airflow running 6 DAGs daily.
So maybe given our airflow is not very loaded up, it allows us to have and numer of scheduler runs set to -1, we'll see in the future when we'll add more DAGs if I encounter the same problem than you.
