+1 -- this caused us a day of outage for our API and was quite hard to track down.

Why not just depend on json instead of json_pure? Doesn't the json gem fall back to a pure implementation when the C ext isn't available?

fwiw, we can't use it from within our app because of a json and json_pure conflict, so it'd be nice to have it depend on json.

+1 -- adding heroku to a new Rails 3 app's Gemfile causes many Rails commands to spew because of the json/pure vs json problem. Here's one example: http://gist.github.com/675927

This is now conditionally required, update your heroku gem and you should have more success.
