I think that the above patch should address the problem. Unfortunately it was not obvious to me how to run the unit test suite, so I did not run it against the above change.

Your fix looks correct to me.
If someone wants to see the fix applied immediately, tell me, otherwise I would like to wait for the next major release.

I am in no hurry since I can just run off the trunk for now, but if you are going to be spending a lot of time carefully reworking the internals before the next major release then it might make sense to just go ahead and do a point release now. :-)
