Also the type of a must be Null because a = 1 gives a "Int can't be null error".

I am having what i think might be a similar issue. I have a function
public function api(path : String, method = "GET", ?params : Hash, ?onResult : Dynamic->Void, ?onError : MyException->Void) : Void

if i call
o.api("path", function (result) { /* stuff */ });
then "method" is null. however if i call it with no other default params
o.api("path");
then "method" is "GET"
so perhaps there is some issue when any optional paramter with a default is followed by another optional that is specified in the call?

Yes, both are similar, in the sense that when you skip some optional arguments, null will be passed. This would require passing the default value instead but the default value is not part of the function type so this is not possible to fix or even give a proper error message.
