maybe we should simply remove it

Well, gladly! The last 10 times I suggested this you had reservations due to building from source on Windows. I know some nightly build servers still use install.ml, but I suppose it should be manageable to switch to the makefile.

specially now, since all nightlies will have to redo their build scripts
anyway!
