Sorry for the very late answer but I must say I am no longer working on this and does not have the setup to validate things.

Your issue is likely coming from the device not being accessible to the application. Either the user does not have permission to the device or the device has been preempted by another driver (like an absolute coordinate mouse driver for instance)
