I can confirm this too. I think this started happening after chrome updated to Version 25.0.1364.152. I don't think the extension was updated in the past week. Not sure why this is happening - I didn't have such problems a week back. If I can help by running a debug version and submit stats, I am willing to do so. I had to disable the extension to stop chrome from crashing.

i have just upgraded to this version. will do some testing and see what comes up.
as for debugging. if you go to your extensions page and tick the 'developer mode' checkbox at the top, you should then be able to select: Inspect views -> _generated_background_page.html just underneath The Great Suspender extension. Not sure if this is going to be much use to you if chrome is crashing but it is the best place to start looking for potential issues.
Happy to have a look myself though as well.
Cheers for letting me know.

I'm having the same issue. It's not Chrome that's crashing, but TGS is crashing within Chrome and this started after upgrading to v25. It will pop up a small box and say "The TGS extension has crashed. Click here to reload. It happens quite often and is pretty annoying. I have to go through all my suspended tabs and manually reload them.

I've looked at the developer mode and the generated background, but I'm not sure what to do with it. I took a screen shot of it and attached it. If you need a copy of it, let me know how to generate/save it and I'll be happy to provide it.

Thanks! BTW, the extension is great - it has been a real life saver for me until this started happening.

thanks for putting some time into the debugging. from that generated background page, if you click the console button you should get a different view which shows some debug information. ideally, open that page when the extension is running, and then go to the console tab. then, after the crash occurs, paste all the output of the console. hopefully that will turn up something.
i've been on the new chrome version for a day now with no problems which is a bit annoying (as i can't help to debug the issue). you mentioned that after the crash you have to manually reload all your suspended tabs after the crash? does that mean the suspended tabs don't disappear when the extension crashes? after the extension restarts are you getting the restore screen (the one that allows you to reload all your suspended tabs)? i'm not sure why you are needing to go through all your suspended tabs and manually reload them. does the 'unsuspend all' button not achieve the same thing?

I've been using TGS for a couple of months. It sped up Chrome greatly. Solved many problems. Since Chrome's update to v.25, crash, crash, crash. Three times this morning before 10 am. First I see the notice in the lower right corner that the Great Suspender has crashed and click to restart it. By the time that has sunk it, Google's Chrome 25 crashes. For the first week or so, I thought it was Chrome crashing, but not know it is TGS. Obviously, Google has introduced an incompatibility in going form v.24 to v.25.

Good luck in finding a fix as this extensions has become important to me.

Some updates on this issue:

Updated chrome to Version 25.0.1364.160 m
Set tabs to be auto-suspended after 30 mins. Approx after 30 mins, chrome crashed (without any warning).
Reopened chrome and clicked restore session when Chrome prompted. No suspended tabs. Maybe the crash happened during the process of suspension. Thought that maybe auto-suspending multiple tabs simultaneously could be causing this.

Made sure the auto-suspend time is set to 'Never'.
Manually suspended about 5 tabs (out of total about 30 tabs).
Couple of minutes later, chrome crashed (with a warning).

Leaving the extension installed with auto-suspension disabled and no suspended tabs doesn't result in a crash.
So I guess it is something what happens during the process of suspension that is the culprit.

I guess this is obvious and you could have figured it already.
Nevertheless, wanted to log my observations in case it helped.

opened chrome://flags/
and enabled

  1. Check for known conflicts with 3rd-party modules
  2. Script Bubble

But it hasn't helped.

Thanks for the detailed feedback.
Just a few extra questions mohanraj.
What operating system are you using?
And do you have screen capturing turned on?

from thegreatsuspender.

mohanraj-r avatar mohanraj-r commented on July 21, 2024

Yes, I have screen capturing turned on.
I am facing this issue on my work machine: Win 7 64 bit.
Coming to think about it - I am not sure if the Chrome in my home machine running Linux has similar issues. I will have to check the version of chrome on it. Will check and post.

mohanraj-r avatar mohanraj-r commented on July 21, 2024

I tried the same steps as above (in my Windows machine) after turning off screen capturing. And both manual and automatic suspension work! without crashing the browser.

Hope that it is the problem - and if it is - glad that we have a temporary fix.

But screen capture was one of the distinguishing features I liked about this extension and made it stand out from all the other similar extensions. Would be great to bring it back. Can't we use other libraries/projects to accomplish this e.g. https://code.google.com/p/chrome-screen-capture

guillermovs avatar guillermovs commented on July 21, 2024

In my case screen capturing isn't the problem, and Chrome isn't crashing due to suspending/unsuspending (that works fine), so it must be something else!

+1 For Crashing

Anything I can do?

deanoemcke avatar deanoemcke commented on July 21, 2024

@KoltonG could you let me know your chrome version, extension version, and also operating system? And also, do you have screen capturing turned on?
How often is it crashing? And is it while you are doing something in particular?

from thegreatsuspender.

KoltonG avatar KoltonG commented on July 21, 2024

Chrome Version: 42.0.2311.152 (64-bit)
Extension Version: 4.74
Operating System: OSX 10.9.5 (Build 13F34) Mavericks

No Screen Capture

It crashed pretty often, I would reload the extension and within 10-20 mins it would say that it has crashed and it says in the popup to click to reload, but then it just crashes again at the same interval.

I usually have 30 + tabs, and just random I guess

from thegreatsuspender.

deanoemcke avatar deanoemcke commented on July 21, 2024

@KoltonG ok. first thing to do is upgrade to latest version v6.16. i'm faily confident this will resolve your issue. due to the nature of the extension, if i force an update out, it can cause users to lose their suspended tabs for ever. because of this, i have disabled automatic updating. you should be able to manually update, or uninstall and reinstall from the webstore. IMPORTANT: make sure you unsuspend all tabs before doing this to prevent them from being lost.
Let me know if the newer version seems more stable.

The extension is crashing for me on Chrome start-up, and crashes again every time I reload it. It takes about 2 seconds to crash if I reload it.
