Once this issue is fixed, you'll be able to use an init-script to force cache-cleanup at the time of your choosing.
There's a PR in review so we hope to this fix in Gradle 8.8.

That said, the cleanup shouldn't be horrendously slow. I wonder if there is competition between Android Studio and Gradle during the cache cleanup. With the upcoming changes you should be able to force-trigger a cleanup, which might make the situation easier to reproduce.

The cleanup should happen quickly (under a few seconds tops), so I don't think there's anything to do about sync specifically. The hanging sounds like a bug, though. I wonder if it's caused by two daemons deciding to both clean up the local cache. 🤔

If indeed it's about two daemons colliding, then the problem should come out with Square more often than with others because of the large build. It produces lots of local cache artifacts that take longer to clean up, so there's a bigger chance for two daemons to overlap.

In my case, the clean-up is never completely stalled, it’s just very very slow. I don’t know if it’s normal or not for a build-cache-1 of about 6.5G and 40k files. I'll try to see if there's multiple daemons running next time this happens.
