go get does work as well as goapp get. The readme mentions potential "warnings", which doesn't really stop you from using the package.
What is the issue exactly you're facing?

Ah, perhaps I chose the wrong title. While go get will allow you to download the package regardless of errors, any tool that's unaware of AppEngine's non-standard import structure will get tripped up. For instance, godep runs go list which fails when it sees import "appengine".
If you put the appengine-specific stuff into files with build flags, the build process will ignore the files unless you're on appengine. Then you can remove the disclaimer in the readme about go get warnings.
I just thought about this some more and I think it might make sense to put everything (not just the appengine-specific stuff) behind a build flag. I'll send a pull request shortly.
