I have! It's a nice product which is an option, though I would like to use an open source offering if possible. MatterMost is one option that I've had a look at.
For now, IRC :)

Another reason to move away from IRC is the lack of safety features such as the ability to block or ban malicious actors. I've not come across Spectrum before but it looks pretty cool!
I've made a Gleam community here -> https://spectrum.chat/gleam
Let's give it a try and if it goes well we can close the IRC channel in favour of Spectrum.

After some usage we've decided that Spectrum isn't the right option due to some bugs and performance problems we encountered. Back to IRC for now.

I've opened a Discord server! Hooray! https://discord.gg/x6GFbVn

Spectrum and discourse are both great, and don't require heavy electron apps. Spectrum is completely free and is promising some integration with GitHub.

Have you looked into Discord? It's similar to Slack but easier to join.

I've never really got into IRC. Probably came to programming to late. It does seem weird to me that there is no history etc etc.
However I have had luck using matrix to access the IRC channel. Perhaps suggesting people not that familiar with IRC use riot.im. There are things not to like about it but it has a familiar email password login, and keeps history once you have signed in.

I struggled to get riot to work for me, none of the buttons seemed to work. I'll have to try it again.
