This cannot be fixed directly. The only way around is to wrap possible failures in async tests in a try-catch block. This happens because if an asynchronous function errors out, there is no way to trap that from the promises layer that invokes that asynchronous function.

Like this:

gauge.step("I am run async and I may fail", function (done) {
    setTimeout(function () {
        try {
            assert.equal(true, false);
        } catch (e) {
            done(e);
        }
    }, 1000);
});
