When I first launched the site a few years ago, this is basically how I had it working (with rowspans). Unfortunately, that became harder to manage with newer browsers being released and making judgment calls on which version belongs in which period.
Currently the versions shown are based on their (adjustable) usage percentage, since that is ultimately what should matter to developers, more so than just how old the version is.
In theory your suggestion would still be useful of course, but in practice I feel the effort involved in getting it to work right is not worth the value it would provide.

Thanks for your response. I didn't realize that it was like that at one time and that it was altered to be the way it is now. I just wanted to get the idea out there if it hadn't been considered. caniuse is so helpful. Thanks for all your (and the communities) hard work on it.
