Unless I am mistaken, Chrome doesn't have support for H.264. I think they dropped it in favor of more open formats. See this article for more details. Perhaps you have an extension that is handling your H.264 videos?

Chrome still supports it, only buggy. I've tested on Windows and Linux. And it's listed as "support" in caniuse.com: http://caniuse.com/#search=264
P.S. Things have changed since 2011. After acquiring Motorola in mid-2012, Google now has some H.264 patents, even suing Microsoft with them.
