This errors seems unrelated to buddy. Because buddy as is does not format errors in this way.
Also, the token function seems to using encrypt for generate token, but later you are using :rs256 and jws backend that are signature based. If you want to generate token compatible with jws backend you need to use the same options for both and use jwt/sign instead of jwt/encrypt.

ah yeah i should have commented that out, I'm using tokens from another server that's written with spring/oauth/etc , so that's not used in my code. I've just pulled in the public key from that server
