Yup, sounds reasonable. I wonder whether to support the full gamut of Markdown, or just a subset? Also I think the Markdown should be converted in Javascript, rather than on the Rails side.

I think the full gamut would probably be easier between the several gems that already exist (RedCarpet, Markaby, etc.). Also, I think a JS plugin for parsing it on the client side would be fine. Especially if you can have it only parse it when it's hovered over for example as that would be less load on the client since most stories won't need the descriptions read on every page view.
