I think the simplest way is to add another cfhelper function getdim() :: int which returns the dimensionality (probably all it needs to be is an alias for getpar("NDIM") or something like that). After that it is trivial to change line 526 (same for line 540):

# Try to get acquisition parameter first.
# Check indirect dimension
p_acqus = p_spec.parents[1] / "acqus"
p_acqu2s = p_spec.parents[1] / "acqu2s"
v1, v2 = None, None
if p_acqu2s.exists():
v1 = _get_acqu_par(par, p_acqu2s)
v2 = _get_acqu_par(par, p_acqus)
if v1 is not None and v2 is not None:
return np.array([v1, v2])
elif v2 is not None:
return v2

to

if p_acqu2s.exists() and getdim() == 2:

Actually, having getdim() will also help with #69 as then inside get1d_real() we can have

try:
    # ... code
except FileNotFoundError:
    if getdim() == 2:
        # raise helpful message from None
    else:
        raise

PARMODE = acquisition parameter for number of dimensions
PPARMOD = processing parameter for number of dimensions
