You can enable SIP again after patching. What is the maximum refresh rate of your display?
from mac-pixel-clock-patch-v2.
I think that mac can do 4k@30/40Hz so about 340m pixels per second. Rough calculation from the top of my head that's ~90 Hz for 2560x1440 if your display can do more it might negotiate a higher refresh rate with your mac that it can physically deliver.

Like I say it was working beautifully until last night when I did whatever stupid thing I did - obviously it wasn't re-enabling the SIP then but I must have done something stupid. I'd just like to be able to reset the whole thing and start again as if nothing had happened. Is that possible?

Does HDMI still work?
You can unpatch with SIP disabled see the instructions
from mac-pixel-clock-patch-v2.
HDMI still works but that allows for only the lower res. The DP cable connection is the one I want but that's just 'no signal' now.
(Where do I find the instructions?)
PS: thanks for weighing in on this
