To restrict number of elements allowed in a repeating group, define a group dimension composite type with "minValue" and "maxValue" attributes on the numInGroup field.
The specification section "Range of group entry count" should state this explicitly and give an example.

So if I had a large optional field (or group of fields) and wanted to avoid writing them on the wire when omitted, I could use a repeating group with 0 or 1 occurs ? Or is there a better way to do that ?

The group dimension itself is always sent on the wire. However, if numInGroup is set to zero, then no space is allocated for group entries. So in effect, this can be a way to control allocation of a group of optional fields with numInGroup minValue=0 maxValue=1.
