The problem seems to be text-rendering: optimizeLegibility, which is nonstandard and reported to cause this kind of bug: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/text-rendering
https://storage.googleapis.com/fish-test-123/5/tutorial.html has an example with this fixed.

I suspect this is due to the display: inline-block at https://github.com/fish-shell/fish-site/blob/master/site/docs/current/user_doc.css#L100. Some posts like https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!msg/chrome/bWUDNxLPkTo/2CAV7hWo5BUJ indicate a similar problem.
It looks like that style might not really be needed?
