Good call. It looks like item renderers in native Android and iOS lists have a minor delay before they change to the down state.

Maybe just preventing the change in existing selected item is worth it.
I do notice that if I touch just long enough in the Contacts app on iOS it will flicker to select but then remove the selection if scrolling initiates...

After looking at your example code I see that one can avoid this whole issue by setting defaultSelectedSkin on SimpleItemRenderer so that all up/down states look the same. I was actually only setting the selectedSkin which then causes the flicker.

I am happy with just closing this issue for now if one just knows to use defaultSelectedSkin.
