I see some points here:

  1. Variables to influence CMake to for example find dependencies. This is an ongoing task and 19.0 has removed a lot of this and moved to cmake's default search methods. This sometimes has some drawbacks, but it generally is on a good way.

  2. Variables that currently need to be set when using FairRoot (after configure, build, install). For the time being there is some config.sh that should have all sthe setup code to get an environment for using FairRoot. We are fully aware, that we want to get rid of this and bake good defaults into the library. The progress on this isn't as good as we would like it to be.

We could see this ticket as a general reminder, that we still have work left to do.

I personally prefer actionable items.
Are there any particular environment variables of concern? Ones that interfere with other things?

If the above conditions are met, I consider this issue as resolved.
