This seems to be a bug in jupyter-book.
Traced back to the toc.yml file entry:
# Adds a searchbar link, as the url is commented out.

Setting url: Search (capital S) fixed the issue for a local deployment on a jekyll server. However, this is insufficient when deploying from github hosting service and a symlink error is returned.
Temporary fix until further update from jupyter-book project: comment out the menu option from toc.yml.
